The newest commercial from Belk has been airing during bowl games features Eric Hutchinson’s “Best Days”. I do believe this is the first ad with Eric’s music as a feature.

I just got back from seeing Eric at the House of Blues in Dallas, and at Stubbs in Austin. The rooms at both venues were rather small, so the shows had a great intimate feel to them, and despite both shows being sold out, there was still plenty of elbow room. They did not oversell the spaces.
Eric’s band has expanded from a trio to a quartet and the difference is amazing. First, Steven Robinson sets the pace on drums and does some backup singing. Next is Andrew Perusi on Bass and backup vocals. He is always smiling and even did a little Temptations like dance number with Eric. And finally, the addition that makes the most difference from the trio, Elliott Blaufuss on guitar/keyboards/backup vocals. When Eric is on keyboards, Elliott can take over guitar duties. When Eric is on guitar, Elliott can move to keyboard. He “fills out” the sound of the band. The energy these four musicians bring to the stage is incredible.
Eric started off with “Best Days” from the new album Moving Up Living Down. Then he blasted into a funked-up “You Don’t Have To Believe Me” off of his freshman (not really) album Sounds Like This. With the audience now rocking, he blazed through 2 hour of music, pulling from both albums, and surprising everyone with “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” from the Beatles, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” from Queen, and an “improv” song each night. His voice has never sounded better and the new addition of backup harmonies from Steven, Andrew and Elliott bring a new dimension to the live show.
Eric is a truly gifted vocalist and keyboardist, and his guitar work is uncanny (does everyone realize how hard some of those songs are to play?) If the enthusiasm of the band didn’t win over everyone in the audience, then Eric’s quick wit and sly banter surely did.
Stay tuned for more pics, more videos, and an interview with Eric.

Chris proposed to Kellie live on stage at the concert at Stubbs in Austin, so Eric had to make up a song on the spot. Congratulations Chris and Kellie!
and the surprise proposal

In The First Place
Song and Lyrics by Eric Hutchinson
If you had any idea what it was gonna take
Would you have gotten started in the first place
All these commitments you’ve made
They keep on adding up
Because you got addicted from the first taste
Ooooh, nobody wonders
Nobody really cares
Ooooh, about your intentions
Until you gotten there
(Chorus)
Oooo, when you started out, you were just a blank space
You started out, you were just an ordinary face
You started out, now you’ve got to finish what you’ve done
Isn’t that why you started in the first place
Started in the first place
If you had ever believed
That you were gonna break
Would you have gotten going in the first place
All these decisions it takes
To get you through the day
With no one even noticing your heart break
Ooooh, are you alone yes
Are you in trouble no
Ooooh, people’s opinions
They tend to come and go
Oooo, when you started out, you were just a blank space
You started out, you were just an ordinary face
You started out, now you’ve got to finish what you’ve done
Isn’t that why you started in the first place
Started in the first place
How do you know
When you’re finally done
If you’ve got nothing to show
How do you know
When all the people you might trust
All forget to let you know
Ooooh
Oooo, when you started out, you were just a blank space
You started out, you were just an ordinary face
You started out, now you’ve got to finish what you’ve done
Isn’t the why you started in the first place
Started in the first place
Can you remember at the start
Can you remember trying your first shot
Can you remember wanting to be there
Can you remember wanting to be there
Do you know why you started in the first place
Do you know why you started in the first place
In the first place
Started in the first place
Started in the first place

The People I Know
Song and Lyrics by Eric Hutchinson
I’ve got a best friend who I’ve known some time
And after all of these years I’ve got to read his mind
And when he leaves the room I can feel him sigh
As his thoughts they slip out like whispers
Who would’ve know it’d be this hard to wait
For one person to person to communicate
And it never feels dramatic while we complicate
Thank god for old friends they always forgive us
I’m longing for the house remembering all these days
Never done enough, everything feels great
If I am not myself, then who am I pretending to be
[ Tab from: http://www.guitaretab.com/e/eric-hutchinson/252647.html ]
(Chorus)
And I said how am I gonna get by
Without the help of the people I know
For better or worse we all come together
And they won’t let me die alone
I said they won’t let me die alone
And I’ve got a sister who I barely see
Despite the fact the lives right up the block from me
And when we run into each other on the street
It’s like two strangers soul to soul
When I was younger she was younger too
It seems the space is the only thing that really grew
And now we’re both grown up and still without a clue
Thank god for family they always forgive us
I’m thinking of the house where we were always raised
In every family tree some history remains
If I am not myself, then who am I pretending to be
And I said how am I gonna get by
Without the help of the people I know
For better or worse we all come together
And they won’t let me die alone
I said they won’t let me die alone
Maybe I’m not supposed to be close
To all of the people I need the most, need the most
And I said how am I gonna get by
Without the help of the people I know
For better or worse we all come together
And they won’t let me die alone
I said now how am I gonna get by
When I’m afraid of the people I know
For better or worse we all come together
And they won’t let me die alone
I said they won’t let me die alone
I said they won’t let me die alone
I said they won’t let me die alone

THE BASEMENT
Song and Lyrics by Eric Hutchinson
Whooa, whooa, whooa
I’m going down to the basement ya’ll
Where people all have a good time
The parties that I hear have nothing to do with
My ears are going out of my mind, mind, mind
Down here they play the real thing
Songs that were really rock and roll
It’s a cliche to put it this way
But they don’t make em like that anymore, more, more, more
So if they put me in the spot light
I’m never leaving the floor
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Ooohhh
An old man gets on the mic
Tells us to hang our burdens up
He says songs you hear today all start to get in the way
Till you’re barely feeling the love, love, love, love
He drops the needle on a pop song
He drops the needle on some soul
And I watch a pimp fall in love over there
Dancing to songs their parents would know, know, know, know
So everybody give me room now
Watch me cut a rug in the show
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Ooohhh
Party people sweat out the night
Let your body do just what it likes
Just want to hear some favorite before my years
Dance soldiers forgetting our day jobs
Trying to get off cause we really came to rock and roll
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
I’m going down to the basement
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Cause I really want to rock and roll
Say I really want to rock and roll

BEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES
Song and Lyrics by Eric Hutchinson
I get myself up every day
To fight this woe is me demeanor
If things had gone another way
Now would my grass be any greener
And as I’m struggling on my own
I wonder if I’m all alone
Give and take, we catch our breaks
We all learn to survive
But don’t look now, say don’t look now
Cause here we are
Living the best days of our lives
Whooa these are the best days of our lives
I fly around the world to spend
The nights with strangers and their lovers
I notice happiness depends
On if we share it with each other
So is there something I can do
To spend my life right here with you
Give and take, we catch our breaks
We all learn to survive
But don’t look now, say don’t look now
Cause here we are
Living the best days of our lives
Whooa these are the best days of our lives
Oooh, these are the best days of our lives
As we are walking through the fire
Isn’t it great to be alive
Give and take, we catch our breaks
We all learn to survive
But don’t look now, say don’t look now
Cause here we are
Living the best days of our lives
Whooa these are the best days of our lives
These are the best days of our lives
Whooa these are the best days of our lives
Give and take, we catch our breaks
We all learn to survive
But don’t look now, say don’t look now
Cause here we are
Living the best days of our lives

TALK IS CHEAP
Song and Lyrics by Eric Hutchinson
Talk is cheap, and I should know
I’ve given my everything, and it wasn’t close
People mean well, and still make a mess
From now on I’m listening, and saving my breath
Lately I’m losing my appetite for all the pretty young girls and the socialites
who just talk, and this is what we do we just talk
Watch em waste breath on a magazine or rehash what the television shows all mean
It’s just talk, and this is what we do we just talk
Some people don’t know how they really feel
Some people can’t talk about what is real
And I can never chit chat all day long
Some people just look for an open ear
Some people don’t care what you want to hear
And everybody’s talking while they are stringing me along
I don’t know about what to do
Cause talk is cheap
And I don’t want to wait for you
Cause talk is cheap
I don’t know how you spend the time
But I’m done wasting all of mine
Cause talk is cheap
Lately I’m tired of politics and listening to the never ending arguments
That just stall, and this is what we do we just talk
I’ve never known someone to change their mind
After the heated debate or move the moral lines
We just crossed, this is what we do we just talk
Some people be cute and they draw the line
Some people can’t choose over left and right
But I could never stomach all that creep
Some people don’t care enough
Some people get scared enough
To get talked into something that they think they should believe
Oh, I don’t know about what to do
Cause talk is cheap

Eric’s first holiday song is available for free right now on erichutchinson.com!
(We Can Remember) New Year’s Eve
funny how time slips away
one more year gone by
and our stories will convey
how our tears ran dry
things won’t be like before
but i’m pretty sure
spirits will endure
and we can remember new year’s eve
take your eye off of the clock
you can hold time still
opportunity will knock
leaving you fulfilled
as an old year turns
think of what we’ve learned
hope and promise burned
and we can remember new year’s eve
people get bent out of shape
and searching out of plans they made for one big night
time’s a man made measure of business and pleasure
and it starts to take over our lives
and we let it
oh we can’t forget
when we look back on these days
we will find some truth
in the year that patiently
celebrated youth
save the season for your friends
smiles will transcend
this is not the end
and we can remember new year’s eve
